The ADA just announced a new paradigm of dentistry: NonRestorative Caries Treatment. Enabled by Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) and bolstered by discing, ART/ITR, SMART, and Hall crowns, “leaving caries in the tooth” with or without a restoration is now standard of care. These changes have brought about new opportunities—and new challenges!

While SDF and complementary techniques are faster and less invasive, defining a billing philosophy is tricky and monitoring outcomes is fundamentally different than for traditional restorations. Nevertheless, they can be combined: attendees will learn why SDF is Dr. Jeremy’s gateway drug to glass hybrid cements (e.g. HV-GIC). There is also an overwhelming load of marketing hype about preventives, which has caused many to miss the breakthroughs in materials that actually work, such as Xylitol for caregivers and topical Iodine. Most dentists start using these techniques with patients for whom they have no better options; but with experience we all eventually ask ourselves: "Doesn't every patient deserve modern caries management?"

Learning Objectives

  • Design billing strategies for minimally invasive techniques that are fair to patients and the practice.
  • Learn how to monitor and properly respond to outcomes of non-restorative caries treatments.
  • Learn how to properly place glass ionomer as a sealant, temporary, or definitive restoration.
