Urge Your Senators to Pass ELSA

Take action now: Ask the Senate to pass the Ensuring Lasting Smiles Act before the New Year.

As you know, the Ensuring Lasting Smiles Act (ELSA) passed the House of Representatives in April with 310 bipartisan votes. The Senate bill currently has 42 bipartisan cosponsors, but with limited congressional days remaining, it is critical that we push Congress to include this important legislation in any year-end package.

One out of every 33 children in the US is born with a congenital anomaly. These anomalies include severe oral and facial defects and can interfere with the ability to breathe, speak and/or eat in a normal manner. For many children, specialized surgery is needed and the procedures are reconstructive, since they are performed to correct abnormal structures. However, despite the reconstructive nature and necessity of such procedures, many insurance companies consider these services to be merely cosmetic. While they may provide coverage for the preliminary surgeries, insurers will delay or deny follow-up or corrective procedures, including necessary dental treatment, which can have a negative impact on a child’s developmental milestones.

Today, we are asking you to request your Senators’ support to pass this important legislation before the end of the year. Please help us get ELSA over the finish line this Congress so we can help patients with craniofacial anomalies and ensure they have the necessary coverage to restore their ability to function.
